Round 17
Seniors
Knowing that Castlemaine would come out hard and attack the contests with great vigour, it was pleasing to see Gisborne respond with a five goal to one first quarter, with all players contributing throughout the quarter. However, by half time Castlemaine were leading by 34 points thanks to a brilliant second term, kicking 10 goals to Gisborne’s three points. Gisborne coach Ty Elliott asked the players to lift, to man up and play accountable football during his half time address to the playing group. The Bulldogs fought hard to be within one point of the Magpies at three-quarter time, however, Castlemaine had the wind at their backs in the last term. Continuing on the theme of accountable football, Gisborne finished strongly with Adam Pokrovsky, Scott Walsh, Ollie and Casey making their presence felt across the ground. Coach Elliott was pleased the way the playing group stuck to their game plan and structures to deny Castlemaine their first win for the season. Smart play from Darren Farrugia, Tom may and Like Saunders resulted in Gisborne outscoring Castlemaine 7.2 to 2.6 in the last quarter.

Goals: O.Messaoudi, D.Farrugia 3, T.May, L.Saunders, J.Lynch 2, S.Comerford, C.Summerfield, B.Shipard, A.Pokrovsky, S. Walsh, J.DiCamillo 1
Best: A.Pokrovsky, S.Walsh, O.Messaoudi, C.Summerfield, S.Comerford, D.Weaver.

Reserves
Had a convincing win over Castlemaine by 65 points with winners all over the ground. The win allows Gisborne to participate in finals action with the player group building in strength and confidence. Coach Damian Slater was pleased the way the boys hit the contests and shared the ball around. How far the boys progress in the finals will ultimately depend upon their desire and hunger for the ball. Topping off the day was a splendid individual effort by Grant Farrugia kicking seven goals for the day.

Goals: G.Farrugia 7, C.Docherty 3, J.Werrett, W.Jennings, H.Govan
Best: G.Farrugia, H.Simpson, K.Grbac, D.Pante, J.Storie, M. Bouwmeester

Under 18’s
In a likely preview of the first week of the finals the young dogs fronted up against the Castlemaine Magpies on a very windy morning.

Castlemaine kicked first with the 4-5 goal wind which was favoring the South end of the ground and were hard in for the ball and quickly had 4 goals on the board as they took every opportunity. The Dogs were struggling to link together and get clean breaks from stoppages.

Persevering Gisborne was rewarded by 3 late quarter goals with Kieren Haddad kicking 2 and Lachie Crosbie another. Better players in the first quarter included Hamish Govan, Jamerson Campbell and Mathew Trost.

In the second quarter we only let the Pies score a single point into the breeze but unfortunately we wasted opportunities by either going indirect or not delivering to advantage to the forwards. Two goal and four behinds was a poor return for the effort considering the strength of the wind advantage. For the quarter Hamish Govan continued his good form whilst Eamom McKenna and Callan Haynes also contributed.

As for the first quarter Castlemaine played intelligent football in the 3rd scoring 4 goals with the breeze and whilst we kicked 1:1 we would start the last quarter 10 points downs kicking with a strong breeze.

In the last quarter Castlemaine defended strongly and luckily for the Dogs Mathew Trost was steady deep in our defence repelling several scoring opportunities. In a very tense tussle our inability to hit targets when kicking with the breeze was to prove critical as Castlemaine scored 50 of their 51 game points with the breeze but we could only manage 3:8: 26.

Disappointing as it was a draw was a fair outcome given the lack of system in our play. Almost certainly we will now play Castlemaine in two weeks in the Elimination Final where only a solid team effort will deliver a win.

Round 16
Seniors
Whilst Maryborough got the jump on the Bulldogs early and led by 22 points at the quarter time break, to Gisborne’s credit, they fought back to be within 3 goals at half time. Gisborne coach, Ty Elliott was pleased with the comeback and asked the playing group to continue to play accountable football and to move the ball at all costs. With a goal the difference, five minutes into the third quarter, the Bulldogs were having a real crack. Unfortunately, someone switched the lights off which enabled Maryborough to kick 6 unanswered goals within a 8 minute burst to stamp their authority on the game. Although the Bulldogs never gave up the chase the margin was too great going into the last quarter and saw Maryborough win by 51 points.

Goals: T. May 5, D. Farrugia 2, O. Messaoudi 2, J. Lynch 2, L. Saunders 2, L. Testro, S. Walsh, S. Comerford
Best: O. Messaoudi, S. Walsh, D. Weaver, T. May, T. Stanton-Smith, A Pokrovsky

Reserves
The reserves team had an inspired with against second placed Maryborough to further consolidate their place in the 2010 finals. Coach Damien Slater focussed on winning the contested ball at all costs as a theme for the playing group and it certainly paid dividends. Leading all day the Bulldogs were hard at the contests underpinned by some great individual work by the senior playing group. A great win and well done to the boys.

Goals: D. Slater, J. Collins, C. Docherty, R. Dillon, J. Formosa, J. Werrett
Best:

Seniors :
A disappointing loss Kyneton last week (since Round 15, 2001) in appalling conditions signaled Gisborne’s fifth loss in a row, the worst since joining the BFL in 2000. Kyneton got the jump on the Bulldogs in the first term as they led by 22 points at quarter time, 4.6 to 1.2, kicking with the wind. The weather conditions at the show grounds made it extremely difficult for both teams to execute their game plans, although Gisborne closed the deficit to 15 points by half time. The second half of the game saw both teams battle hard for the ball with Gisborne struggling to catch up with Kyneton to breach the first quarter deficit. Coach Ty Elliott, whilst disappointed with the result, did praise the efforts of all players and indicated to the group that the football journey comes in all shapes and sizes. The lesson learnt in this instance is for the playing group group to play accountable, smart football and not to turn over the contested ball.

The task ahead of Gisborne today, against Golden Square, would seem somewhat difficult, however, our members and supporters need to know the group will play to the best of their individual and team abilities, continue to work on their structures and have a “crack”

Goals : O. Messaoudi 2, S. Comerford, M. McKenzie, D. Farrugia and C. Illman 1

Best : O. Messaoudi, D. Weaver, H. Levis, S. Comerford, T. Stanton-Smith, J. Arnold.

Reserves: Keeping their finals hopes alive for the 2010 season, the reserves recorded a comfortable win against the tigers by 91 points. In difficult conditions, the Bulldogs controlled the game all day and never allowed Kyneton to get started. With numbers coming back to the team in the coming weeks, Coach Damian Slater, believes the group is capable of playing finals football and is ready to take up the challenge.

Goals : G. Farrugia, C. Docherty 3, D. Pante, J. Bain 2, S, Hamilton, A. Storie, T. McCormick, P. Nicholls, J. Formosa.

Best : S. Hamilton, D.Pante, J. Bain, W. Jennings.

Under 18’s

In arctic conditions of howling wind and driving rain the young Dogs put in a solid 4 quarter performance posting a comfortable win by 112 points against the Tigers who tried hard all day.

Led by our captain Dylan McFarlane, who was both under the many packs in slippery conditions and pumping the ball forward with long kicks, our clean ball handlers of Callen Haynes, Hamish Govan, and Tim Hynson ensured we had good scoring opportunities throughout the game whether kicking with the gale or into it.

Whilst we had 9 different goal scorers Daine Mann (3), Tim Walsh (4) and Hamish Govan (3) were the best converting the hard work of those further up the ground. Andre Headberry, Tom Cecil, Kieran Haddad and Eamon McKenna were also good in terrible conditions.

Starting with the bare 18 and finishing with 16 the performance of the young Dogs was very solid however some tough games in the coming weeks will determine where we finish on the ladder at the end of the home and away season. Team play of sharing the ball and first/best option will be the way in which we will put pressure on the top three sides in coming weeks.

Goals : T. Walsh 4, D.Mann, H. Govan 3, L. O’Gorman, C, Haynes, T. Hynson 2, K. Haddad, E. McKenna, D. McFarlane 1.

Best : D. McFarlane, C. Haynes, S. Mills, T. Chapman, T. Cornish, H.Govan.

Round 13
Again, the Bulldogs were slow out of the blocks with a sluggish first quarter against a dominant South Bendigo. Nine minutes into the first term the scores were level at one goal apiece, however, the remainder of the term was all the bloods producing 6.2 in a 16 minute burst. The domination started from the center bounce with clearances 8-1 for South Bendigo. Coupled with a strong forward focus in Davies and Hardinge, the Bulldogs did not recover for the rest of the game.

Whilst completely outplayed in the first quarter, the young bulldog team completed well in the second and third quarters kicking 6.5 to South Bendigo's 6.5 in these two quarters. Unfortunately Gisborne let themselves down in the last term and posted only three behinds to South Bendigo's seven goals. The final score perhaps do not reflect the endeavour and commitment shown by the young bulldog team who kept hitting the contest time and time again, in what was a brave effort. Ty was pleased about the way the boys kept having a go and was especially pleased with the senior players who led the way. Players such as Casey Summerfield, Shaun Comerford, Ollie Messaoudi, Scott Walsh and Darren Farrugia. Today we take on Kyneton at the showgrounds in a must win game.

Goals: C. Summerfield. S. Comerford 2, O Messaoudi, D. Weaver and D Farrugia

Best; C. Summerfield, O. Messaoudi, S. Walsh, S. Comerford, D. Weaver and J.Arnold

Reserves : Coach Damian Slater in addressing the playing group after the game was particularly pleased with the all round effort of the boys. Undermanned through injury and player absence the Bulldogs kept at the South Bendigo team all day and led at every change. The Bloods tried to overrun the Bulldogs in the last quarter but they responded magnificently and held on to win by 11 points. A great effort given that South Bendigo are placed third on the ladder. This win certainly keeps our finals hopes alive.

Best; J. Storie, M. Bouwmeester, D. Pante, s. Hamilton, J. Formosa and A. Storie

Goals: D. Pante 3, M. Bouwmeester 2, W. Jennings, J. Bain, J. Beswick, A Allan

Under 18's

In good conditions the young dogs were looking for another win to consolidate their position on the ladder and move closer to finals football

After a poor first quarter where South kicked 2:2 and the Dogs were scoreless it was obvious that we were in for a tough game and the numerous turn overs and poor ball use going forward would have to be turned around

Mathew Trost playing deep in defence took several goal line saving marks and cleared well and whilst our midfield was getting plenty of the ball our football smarts had deserted us

The coaching staff made some critical changes at quarter time with key defenders Eamon McKenna and Ben Watt going forward – a decision which ultimately to prove critical with Eamon kicking 3 goals and Ben 2 for the game. With our ball use slowly improving we were 10 points down at half time in a close contest.

Stephen Mills was playing a blinder through the middle of the ground with his blind turns and attack on the ball leading the way. Hamish Govan and Dylan McFarlane were also playing tough under the pack footy.

The last half was a much better standard of football and with scores tightening we held a narrow 5 point lead at the last break. Simmo was hopeful that the players could rally as they did against South at the QEO earlier in the season where we came from behind in a strong finish to overrun South. Fitness and coolness under pressure would prove crucial.

An early goal gave the Dogs an early break but goal for goal play meant the game went down to the wire with players such as Kieran Haddad, Tim Walsh and James Morley lifting to control the play.A tough 6 point win sees the young Dogs 2 games and % clear in 4th position with a game against neighbouring Kyneton next week.

Best :S,. Mills, D. McFarlane, B. Watt, H. Govan, K.Haddad, M.Trost

Goals: E. McKenna 3, B.Watt, T.Walsh 2, H.Govan, T.Cornish 1.

Round 12
In what was seen as a turn around game against Eaglehawk on the Queens Birthday round 10 fixture, where the Bulldogs only just failed to take the game after having led for most of the day, last weekend's result against Kangaroo Flat was certainly disappointing. Mindful of Kangaroo Flats first quarter in round 1 where Madden kicked a staggering 10 goals, the Bulldogs came out to play hard and aggressive football and led by 25 points at quarter time. Some strong defensive work by the Gisborne backline saw the Bulldogs in full control both on the ground and on the scoreboard. Faced with a deficit going into the second quarter, Kangaroo Flat stepped up and bombarded the score board adding 9.7 to Gisborne's 1.3 in what was a 42 minute quarter favoured by the breeze. After half time, the Roo's added a further 6.9 to Gisborne's 5.3 to register their fifth victory of then season. The bulldogs, in what was seen as a toss of a coin game were disappointed in not being able to replicate their efforts of the first quarter. Gisborne coach Ty Elliott said young teams - like this often find it difficult to sustain concentrated efforts for four quarters, and can sometimes get a bit ahead of themselves and play individualised rather than team football. In summary, mention must go to tall forward Jarrad Lunch, winger Ben Shippard and centre half forward Lachlan Testro who all contributed throughout the game. As always, senior players Messaoudi, Summerfield, Comerford and McKenzie battled hard all day for possession of the ball. Young Lachlan Crosbie, from the under 18 group continues to grow in confidence contributing 2 goals and is certainly a player of the future. Tim Stanton-Smith also continues to impress as he develops his presence around the ball and the playing group.

Goals : D. Farrugia 5, J. Lynch and L. Crosbie 2, B. Shippard, O. Messaoudi, T. May, L. Testro 1.

This week the Bulldogs take on South Bendigo in what will be a test of character for the young Gisborne team. Good Luck.

Reserves: Beaten by 3 points after the final siren, coach Damien Slater was ambivalent about the result indicating the group had its chances to win. With a depleted bench and several absences, the playing group battled hard all day to contest the ball and never gave up hitting the contest. The reserves group is looking for a better result against South Bendigo today at the Graveyard. Special mention to the under 18 players for filling the gaps- fantastic club spirit.

Best: M. Bouwmeester, D. Slater, W. Jennings, D. Weaver, H. Simpson, G. Farrugia

Goals: M. Bouwmeester, G. Farrugia 3, H. Simpson, T. Mc Cormick 2, J. Beswick, C. Haynes 1.

Under 18s : Had a comfortable win against Kangaroo Flat by 85 points to put them back in well into finals contention. Under the direction of Phil Crosbie, the team played solid team orientated football and showing real signs of progress in terms of team structures and playing for each other. The group continues to develop and will be looking for another 4 points against South Bendigo today.

Best: L. O'Gorman, H. Govan, J. Campbell, D. McFarlane, B. Watt, S. Whyte.

Round 8
In conditions akin to mid-winter, Gisborne registered its third win for the season against Castlemaine at Gardiner Reserve last Saturday. Both sides were inaccurate in front of gaols as evidenced by the score line of 9.21 (75) to Castlemaine's 6.14 (50). The wet and slippery conditions made for a tight game as the Gisborne players worked tirelessly all game to show great endeavour in pushing the ball forward towards goal. Gisborne coach Ty Elliott was happy with the effort and commitment of the playing group, but did confess "we missed a lot easy chances and in fact should have won by a lot more". Whilst Gisborne lost veteran Mat McKenzie in the warm up with a hamstring injury and young gun Michael Thornton to an ankle injury in the second quarter, the Bulldogs did gain Ollie Messaoudi and Scott Walsh returning from injury, as well as, a fully fit Clay Illman having recovered from a "corkie" against Kyneton in Round 4.
The victory against Castlemaine puts the Bulldogs at 3 wins and 5 losses with a winnable game against Sandhurst today. The second half of the season will see an improved Gisborne side as the playing group continues to improve and play for each other.

The best players for the Bulldogs were again led by in-from onballer Casey Summerfield, along with Ryan Dillon on the wing, Shaun Comerford through the mid field in his 100th senior game, as well as, Heath Simpson, Lachlan Testro and Tom May.

Goals : L. Testro 3, T. May, J. Arnold, R. Dillon, L. Saunders, B. Shipard, C. Summerfield.

Reserves;

Back on the winners board after successive losses the reserves had an easy win over Castlemaine by 82 points. Never really in danger of defeat, the boys teamed well and shared the ball across the whole of the field for an impressive win.

The best Players for Gisborne were A. Storie through the mid field, onballers D. Rocard and D. Weaver, as well as, coach D. Slater, R. McKibbin and Tim Stanton-Smith.

Goals : D. Weaver 3, J. Campbell, J. Werrett, R. McKibbin, J. Gruevski, C. Docherty 2, D. McFarlane, D. Favaro 1.

Under 18's

Conceding the first two goals of the game from centre clearances the young Dogs were unsettled by the attack on the ball by a committed Castlemaine.

The first half would prove to be a close affair played in greasy conditions which were maybe not to the liking of the more skilful lighter framed Pups.

The backline was tight after the initial onslaught however the onballers and forwards would need to work harder to ensure Castlemaine didn’t score easily.

Players to standout in the first half included Callan Haynes who used his pace to advantage, the Captain Dylan McFarlane who relished his return to the early game from senior duty and Lachie Crosbie who continued his strong 2010 form.

Finishing the first half ahead by a solitary straight kick the Pups would have to dig deep if they were to add to their 5 wins for the season.

As for the first two quarters the third was a tough encounter initially but slowly the Pup’s better ball use gave them late quarter scoring opportunities – goals to Hamish Govan (2), Sean Whyte, Lachie Crosbie and Callan Haynes (running goal from deep on the flank) proved a game breaker as a 5 goal to 2 quarter set up a 4 goal break at the last change.

On top and playing a running, sharing and skilful game in drier conditions the Pups slammed on 7 goals to record a good win by 57 points.

Best player was Callan Haynes who was damaging all day, midfielder Dylan McFarlane and onballer/forward Jameson Campbell with special mention to Kieran Haddad and Hamish Govan who were also prominent throughout the game.

Next week’s game against second placed Sandhurst at the QEO will be a tougher contest were we will need to play both a skillful and tough “heads over the ball” game if we are to win.

Goals : L. O'Gorman 3, J. Campbell, L. Crosbie, H. Govan, S White 2, T. Hynson, B. Watt, D. McFarlane, C. Haynes, M. Kitching

Round 7
Clearly the difference between Gisborne and Maryborough in its round 7 clash was the first quarter score. Whilst Gisborne had only one less scoring shot than Maryborough, the Bulldogs kicked 1.6 to the oppositions 6.2. It was reminiscent of the Bulldogs round one loss to Kangaroo Flat when they let the opposition dominate in the first quarter. Gisborne coach Ty Elliott indicated that the team did not apply themselves early which was compounded by some missed tackling opportunities and basic skill errors.

Needless to say, over the remaining three quarters the Magpies added 13.11 to their score to Gisborne's 14.11. In the context of this fact, it was disappointing the Bulldogs failed to switch on early in the game. In fact, Maryborough whilst leading all game, including 34 points at three quarter, may well have lost the game had it not been for some missed opportunities at goal early in the last quarter by Gisborne.

Full credit to boys for playing out the game and going down by only 20 points. Their endeavour and persistence all day could not be faulted, and certainly, the club looks forward the match against Castlemaine today.

In summary, Gisborne, which was again missing injured captain Ollie Messaoudi, along with Scott Walsh will be better for the experience, as the playing group prepare for its encounter against Castlemaine. Midfielder Casey Summerfield was again at his best for the secomd week in a row, along with vice-captain Shaun Comerford, Adam Pokrovsky, Tom May and Ryan Dillon.

Best : C. Summerfield, A. Pokrovsky, S. Comerford, T. May, B. Shipard and H. Simpson

Goals : T. May 4, K. Grbac, J. Lynch 2, D. McFarlane, H. Levis, L. Saunders, S. Comerford, R. Dillon, A. Pokrovsky, L. Testro.

Reserves

With a depleted team going into game, we had to bring 4 Under 18 players to help out and Simo got his first game of the year. Faced against a physically stronger and more experienced Maryborough Side, the boys battled it out and eventually were overrun Our pressure and tackling was a highlight but we had no avenue to goal. Weavs and Fudgie continued their great form and Darc was rock solid in defence. Must strike a win against the Maine to remain in contention for the finals. BEST: Slates, Fudge, Weaves, Darc, Timmy, Wighty

Round 6

A week is a long time in football and there was no better example of that than the game against Strathfieldsaye at the graveyard last Saturday. After being taught a football lesson against Golden Square, the Bulldogs regrouped under the coaching and leadership of Ty Elliott and Luke Saunders, to record a courageous win despite having no bench. In an entertaining game, in front of a large home crowd the young Gisborne side went in at half time only 14 points down, despite having lost Clay Illman and Scott Walsh to leg injuries prior to half time.
After the long break, the Bulldogs continued to show why they can never be underestimated under any circumstances as they showed great character to stay in the contest. Casey Summerfield continues to rebuild his form each week and was outstanding in the middle, ands was well supported by Shaun Comerford, Adam Pokrovsky, Aaron Storie, Jarrod Arnold and Jarrod Lynch. Ryan Dillon was prominent in his tagging role against the ever dangerous forward Lachlan Sharp.
Mr "Uncompromising" Luke Saunders received a heavy knock in the final stages of the third quarter and needed to be supported off the ground. His inspiration and toughness at the contest was the catalyst that lifted the team in the final quarter, kicking 5 goals to Strathfieldsaye's one goal. Tom May was the star in the last quarter kicking 3 goals for the Bulldogs in what was an exceptional quarter for him. Tom can never be questioned about his courage or his commitment to the Bulldogs and finished with 4 goals for the day. Other goal kickers for Gisborne were Darren Furrugia with 3 goals, Lochie Testro with 2 goals and one each to A. Storie, C. Summerfield, J. Lynch, R.Dillon and B. Shippard. Ty in his address to the players after the game was elated with their character and endeavour, stating it was the group's best win to date. The many supporters who came out to watch the young Bulldog team certainly acknowledged their efforts and appreciated the contest from start to finish. Today we take on Maryborough keen to build upon the win against Strathfieldsaye. Best players : Summerfield, may, Comerford, Dillon, Pokrovsky and McFarlane.

The reserve team lost a thriller by a point and were clearly disappointed with their efforts. In a game that we let slip, coach Damian Slater, has called upon the boys to regroup against Maryborough in what was their third loss for the season. Team discipline will be a focus at training during the week, along with the need to hit the contest harder. Best players for Gisborne : M. Bouwmeester, P. Taylor, D. Weaver, D. Slater, D. Rocard and T. Stanton-Smith. Goals : M. Bouwmeester 2, T.Stanton-Smith 2, D.Slater, G. Furrugia, D.Pante, T. McCormick and C. Dockert

Starting strongly the U18’s played good football sharing the ball and putting the opposition defence under pressure. Although inaccurate three goals were reasonable reward for early effort however concentration lapsed in the second half of the first quarter with Strathfieldsaye replying with 3 goals.

Lachie Crosbie, Hamish Govan and Tin Hynson gathered early possessions however Strathfieldsaye's open forward line was a concern which meant our forwards and onballers would have to assist the defence by applying more pressure.

The second quarter was Gisborne’s best with a 5 goal to one return for a 22 point lead at the big break. Tim Walsh was leading and kicking well from full forward and with many players contributing to a fast run on style of play confidence was high.

The second half was a struggle for the young Dogs with Strathfieldsaye pressuring well and using their bigger bodies to break through tackles. Eamon McKenna and Lachlan O’Gorman continued to spoil well down back however Gisborne struggled to contain the opposition as they surged forward. Gisborne’s only goal to the quarter was a scrambled snap by Ben Watt whilst Strathfieldsaye added 3 to reduce the lead to 5 points at the last break.

Strathfieldsaye were fired up for the last quarter and Simmo asked the Dogs for a disciplined effort where the ball was shared to give scoring opportunities.

The last quarter was a tense, pressure laden 20 minutes going right down to the wire with ultimately Gisborne’s inability to convert several scoring opportunities proving costly. Surrendering the lead in the last minutes Gisborne worked hard to have a long range after the siren shot for victory but the distance was too great.

Lapses in concentration and discipline together with an inability to shut down Strathfieldsaye’s bursts into their forward 50 ultimately proved costly.

Losing by a solitary point was a bitter lesson but this week the young Dogs will need to use the ball better and improve their defensive pressure if they are to take the 4 points.

The Gisborne netballers, according to Netball Operations Manager, Noelene Rymer, whilst trying hard were generally outclassed by a more determined outfit in Strathfieldsaye. Noelene has asked for a greater commitment from all teams who clearly have the potential to play more consistent netball.

Round 5
Playing against Golden Square at the Country Vet oval was always going to be a difficult assignment for the young Gisborne Bulldogs side who had found some form the previous week against Kyneton. As anticipated, Golden Square completely dominated the game with a 140 point victory, highlighting the fact that they are the benchmark team in the Bendigo Football League. Ty Elliott in his address to the senior group after the match, and clearly disappointed, stated that the result showed our playing group and supporters" where we are at". Against a well disciplined and confident group with a dynamic forward line comprising Grant Weeks, M. O'Toole and A. McErvale, the Bulldogs made little impact on the score board and on the ground. The overall effort was unacceptable, according to the Gisborne coach, who ordered an additional training session for his troops on the Monday night. Clearly the club recognises that season 2010 is one of rebuilding and improving the capacity of the current group to play more accountable football. It is a matter of going back to basics, according to the coaching group, and instilling into all players the need to be hard at the contest to win possession of the football. Whilst the Bulldogs recorded its lowest score of 24 points inits 194 BFL matches, all of the players realize the need to improve from each game and to take positives from their own individual performance for the collective good of the club.

Luke Saunders, Tom May, Casey Summerfield, Josh Di Camillo, Scott Walsh and Heath Levis were gallant for Gisborne, as well as, some pleasing glimpses of form from Kane Grbac, Michael Thornton, Shaun Comerford and Heath Simpson. Congratulations to Dylan McFarlane who has made the transition to senior football in fine form and continues to impress everyone at the club.

Today, at the graveyard we come up against Strathfieldsaye who are playing with greater confidence after their victory against Kangaroo Flat. Be assured, the Bulldogs will come out hard and committed to ensure we have a win. Goals for Gisborne against Golden Square : D. McFarlane 2, J. Campbell 1. Best players : L. Saunders, H. Levis, C. Summerfield, S. Walsh

The reserve team faired little better on the day, going down to Golden Square by 61 points. Unfortunately, a number of players were unable to recover from injuries sustained against Kyneton, along with a number of players who were unavailable due to other reasons. Regrettably, player unavailability impacts on those players who are available each week and who always puts in for the club. In only their second defeat of the season the boys, whilst depleted, were not switched on and subsequently were beaten very easily. Coach Damien Slater urged the players to focus on winning their individual contests to ensure possession of the ball, as well as, supporting each other around the packs. No doubt the reserves team will put on a better show against Strathfieldsaye and put the hard yards on the training track throughout the week. Best players : G. Farrugia, D.Rocard, R.McKibbin, L.Crosbie, R.Comerford and M.Bouwmeester. Goal scorers : A.Allan, H.Govan, G.Farrugia and C.Docherty.

PS: Thank you to those Under 18 players who made themselves available for the reserves match to fill the gaps. Your willingness to support the playing group is appreciated, as well as the support of their parents.

The Under 18's completed the trisector by losing to Golden square by 81 points in what can only be described as a disappointing effort. It was the group's first loss for the season and some hard work is needed on the training track to ensure a better effort in round 6 of the season. The boys were outplayed in most positions and simply did not play accountable football and support each other when needed.

Best: T.Walsh, S.Mills, L.Crosbie, H.Govan, N.Glenister and L.O'Gorman.

Goals : T.Walsh 2, M.Kitching 1, S.Mills 1, M.Trost 1.

The netballers had mixed success against Golden Square with only the A Grade team winning in a nail biting finish. The A graders won 46 to 42 with the scores locked at 32 all at the start of the fourth term. Great defensive work by Polly Salter enabled the forwads to capitalize to win its third game of the season. The girls are currently placed third on the ladder.

Scores in the other matches were as follows : A Reserve - Golden Square 39 d Gisborne 35

B Grade - Golden square 563 d Gisborne 13

Under 17 - Golden Square 41 d Gisborne 13

Round 3

It was certainly a hard day at the office against a much physically bigger and stronger South Bendigo side last Saturday at the QEO. Its far to say the Bulldogs were not clean in their handling of the ball resulting in many turnovers with the Bloods capitalizing on poor use of the ball, lacklustre chasing and tackling. Gisborne were simply out muscled, but did fight back late in the first term with goals from Jarrod Arnold, captain Ollie Messaoudi and Luke Saunders. Following some very honest feedback from coach Ty Elliott, Gisborne's chasing, tackling and use of the ball improved greatly with the Bulldogs showing glimpses of accountable football which has made the club a formidable force in the league in previous years. Going into the long break, and whilst trailing by 33 points, Bulldog supporters were clearly in a positive frame of mind after watching 300 gamer Mat McKenzie, the classy Darren Farrugia and Messaoudi kicking successive goals.

Unfortunately, that was where the game ended for Gisborne who were soundly beaten in all areas of the ground in the second half. South Bendigo dominated with 13 goals after half time to only 1 goal from Gisborne as the Gisborne boys shut down by not running hard enough at the contest to influence the result. Needless to say, Gisborne will hit the training track during the week to focus on fitness and accountable football. From a supporters perspective, there were a number of positives the club can take from the game as we continue to rebuild and regroup for the all important game against Kyneton today. Goal kickers for Gisborne were Messaoudi 2, Farrugia, J. Arnold, M. McKenzie, J. Bain and L. Saunders. Best players : J. Bain, O. Messaoudi, M. Thornton, L. Saunders, M. McKenzie and H. Simpson.

In contrast to the on field performance, the club held a very successful Seasons Launch last Saturday night attracting over 150 players, supporters and sponsors. The night represented an opportunity to acknowledge and thank our major sponsors - McKibbins Transport, Mitre10 Gisborne, Gisborne Foodworks, Macedon Ranges Glass, All Systems Plumbing, City Safety Supplies, Gisborne Plumbing, Rangeview Homes and of course, the Bendigo Bank in Gisborne who proudly sponsored the Seasons Launch. A very special thank you to Natalie Elloitt and Sharon Watt for their professional approach in ensuring the night was a great success. A heartfelt presentation was made to 300 game veteran, Mat McKenzie who received a framed image of himself, as well as, a 300 game cake for all to share.

The reserve team unfortunately went down to South Bendigo in a game that should have been won by the Bulldogs who had the majority of play in the second half of the game. The Gisborne defence worked extremely hard to stifle the Bloods scoring opportunities, as well as, sending the ball deep into the Gisborne forward line on many occasions in the second half of the game. Our forwards simply did not take advantage of the good defensive work and failed to convert on the scoreboard. Clearly these two teams will be battling for finals berths at the end of the season with Gisborne looking forward to a rematch at the Gardiner later in the year. Best for Gisborne - K.Grbac, A. Storie, W. Jennings, D. Slater, D. Rocard and C. Byrne.

The Under 18 team remain undefeated, along with Golden Square and Sandhurst. Trailing by a point going into the final quarter the Under 18 boys put their on the pedal to come home strong winners. Replacement coach Phil Crosbie issued the group with a number of challenges and the boys responded magnificently by kicking five goals to one in the last quarter with accountable and hard football. Best for Gisborne - B. Watt, L. Crosbie, H. Govan, D. McFarlane, C. Hayes and E. McKenna

The netballers, again had mixed success against South Bendigo with only the A Grade team being successful. Christine Harris showed the way with a best on court performance, in what was a physically demanding game given the warm temperatures in Bendigo last Saturday. Final scores : Gisborne 56 d South Bendigo 33. A reserve were beaten by only 9 points in a much better team effort and will be much better against Kyneton today. B grade lost by 33 points to a much stronger South Bendigo side. Our under 17 girls just fell short by 5 goals in an entertaining game that was well appreciated by the spectators.

Remember to try the many new food items, including cappuccinos from our new look canteen. Thanks Nicole and Alicia.

Round 2

Round 2 of the season saw the annual Family Day event host scores of local young rookie footballers and netballers, who took advantage of the” Paratrooper” and Jumping castle, as well as, the Bucking Bull amusements in what was truly a family day for the club. The great weather and the big crowd contributed to a very successful event which helped to promote and lift the profile of the senior football and netball club within the local community. A Under 9 rookies match was played out during the half time interval of the senior which created a lot of interest amongst both the supporters and the Mums and Dads. Special thanks to the sponsors of the event – Rangeview Homes and City Safety Supplies along with Brett and Alicia Vernon who worked very hard to ensure the day was a success. Many thanks also to all our other helpers , committee and supporters who also made sure the day was a success.

Despite the festive atmosphere and the crowd numbers, the seniors unfortunately went down to Eaglehawk in what can be described as a very hard fought game with both sides feeling the effects of the unconditional footy that was played. For almost three quarters the Bulldogs kept the margin between 2 and 3 goals – a vast improvement from its loss to Kangaroo Flat. The intensity and hardness at the contest was pleasing to see, resulting in a better all round performance. Coach, Ty Elliott said there were a lot of encouraging signs from the young and new look Gisborne team. “We had a fair-dinkum crack against a quality side”.

One highlight of the game was the duel between Gisborne’s lock down player Clay Illman and Hawks playmaker Damien Lock – it was tough and uncompromising football which stirred the emotions of supporters from both teams. Again, Like Saunders and Josh Di Camillo, along with Ollie Messaoudi were significant both in attack and defence. Adam Pokrovsky was always hard at the ball and continues to improve in his journey from a severe leg break in season 2009. Best players for Gisborne were J. Di Camillo, C. Illman, L. Saunders, O. Messaoudi, A. Pokrovsky and J. Garvey-Hawke.

The reserve grade recorded their second victory of the season with a 24 point win over Eaglehawk. The Gisborne boys were challenged late in the third quarter by the Hawks who were gathering momentum for a late charge in the final quarter. To the credit of coach Damien Slater and his players, the Bulldogs were able to lift to stem the flow of goals whist at the same time kick away from Eaglehawk. Best players were A. Storie, T. Stanton-Smith, H. Levis, J. Storie, K.Grbac, T. McCormick. Goal kickers – T. Stanton-Smith 3, M. Freake 2 and G. Farrugia 2.

The Under 18 team was also successful with a hard fought win eventually winning by 24 points. In a close tussle for most of the match, the Bulldogs responded to the instructions of coach, Steve Simpson and played much more accountable footy in the final quarter. Best players for Gisborne were D. Mann, E. McKenna, T. Walsh, M. Trost, L. Crosbie, D. McFarlane. Tim Walsh finished the match with 4 goals and R. Hickingbotham with 3.

The netballers had a mixed bag with only the Under 17 team registering a win against Eaglehawk. Netball operations manager, Noelene Rymer is thrilled with the spirit and endeavour of the girls who are certainly enjoying their netball. Best player against Eaglehawk was Anni Stewart.  The A grade team was strong both in attack and defence but fell short at the final siren by 3 goals. Best player was Polly Slater. The a reserve team, whilst giving 100% throughout the game were soundly beaten by 41 points. Best player was Elli Newman. B grade scores were Eaglehawk 59 and Gisborne 12.  No doubt the B team will be much better for the run and the coaching staff will ensure the team gives it all. Best Player was Liana Crockford.

Social News : The club’s Season Launch will be held on Saturday 17th April following the Bendigo South game commencing at 7.30pm. Tickets are $30 and includes a spit roast meal and soft drinks. The event is sponsored by the Gisborne Bendigo Bank. One of the highlights of the evening will be the acknowledge of 300 gamer Mathew McKenzie who plays his 300th game against Bendigo South. A special presentation to Mat will form part of the evening.

A special thank you to our valued sponsors – McKibbins Transport, Mitre 10 Gisborne, Gisborne Foodworks, Gisborne Plumbing, Vic Tavern, All Systems Plumbing, Hardy’s Pharmacy, Macedon Ranges Glass and Gisborne Self Storage.
